NOTE: This chart is two-sided. One side is for use with a Biphasic Defibrillator and the other for use with a Monophasic Defibrillator.
There are 2 basic types of defibrillators on the market, monophasic and biphasic. Both apply direct current, but monophasic defibrillators use an older technology in which current flows from one paddle to the other in a single direction, while biphasic defibrillators use newer technologies that alter the current over time and change its direction between paddles. This allows successful defibrillation at a lower energy than monophasic defibrillators, leading to less heart damage. Because of this, the recommended dosing schemes are different for monophasic and biphasic defibrillators, so if you have a defibrillator in your practice, it is important to use the correct dosing chart for your defibrillator.
